Koyana Education Society’s A visionary man and dynamic leader Late Mr. Balasaheb Desai was representing Patan tehsil as a Member of Legislative Assembly of the state of Maharashtra and a minister for Public Works Department from 1957 to 1960, a minister for Education from 1960 to 1962, a minister for Agriculture from 1962 to 1963, a minister for Home from 1963 to 1967 and a minister for Revenue from 1967 to 1972 in the Maharashtra State Government.
The man who himself went from place to place for his secondary and higher education, thought that he owed a lot to the people of the region Mr. Balasaheb Desai was a mentor of idea of “Free primary, secondary and higher education to the economically backward classes”. His idea was lauded and accepted by the state Government of Maharashtra then. It is a great service Late Mr. Balasaheb Desai as a minister for Education in the state Government of Maharashtra has rendered towards economically backward sections of society. Maharashtra state was the first in India to offer EBC free-ships to economically backward students.
A band of social workers viz. Mr. Bhagawatrao Desai, Mr. K. V. Patil, Dr. Sopanrao Chavan, Late Mr. Dadasaheb Pawar, Mr. Anantrao Desai, Mr. Yusufbhai Shaikh, Advocate Shripatrao Molawade etc., came together under the leadership of Late Mr. Balasaheb Desai and put forward the idea of starting Education Society. Balasaheb Desai reciprocated quickly and facilitated and the dream was realised. ‘Koyana Education Society, Patan’ was founded on 8th December 1967 by these people.
